Enjoy Professional Growth –
In this new-age world of downsizing and cut-backs, the South Texas Chapter of
the Health Physics Society, Inc. (STC-HPS) provides a cost effective answer
for professional growth and fulfillment. We offer meaningful, topical
technical programs at our meetings that are taken directly from
current events surrounding the world of the radiation safety
professional. Of course, as a member, you can also gain leadership skills and
experience by volunteering to be a Standing or Appointed Committee
Chair or running for elective office and serving on the Executive Council.
-
Take Advantage of Networking Opportunities –
Perhaps one of the greatest advantages of STC membership is the opportunity to
meet and converse with other radiation safety professionals. Members
of the STC represent a cross section of the radiation safety and
protection field. Industry, government, academia, and the military are
all represented. Our meetings, attracting an average of 70 radiation
safety professionals, provide ample time for one-on-one
discussion about almost any salient subject. All meetings of the STC
include either a lunch or dinner with a featured keynote speaker.
During these dining events, members socialize in a comfortable,
pleasant setting while enjoying a delightful meal and a
conversation-stimulating keynote presentation.
-
Enjoy Affiliation with a Vanguard Organization
– Long considered and recognized as a leading Chapter of the national HPS, the STC has enjoyed a recent resurgence
at the national level. If you happen to be a national HPS member, you
have no doubt read about our recent accomplishments in the
Health
Physics News. In addition to chapter representation on the national HPS Board
of Directors and Committees, the Chapter consistently nominates
recipients for national honors and awards. Of late, the STC has been
looked to as a successful example of producing highly successful
Science Teacher Workshops. The Chapter strives to provide our quality
product to the rest of the nation. The STC is being considered as
the host Chapter for the 2009 HPS Mid-Year Meeting in San
Antonio, Texas.
-
Earn Continuing Education Units –
The STC is pleased to offer continuing education units (CEUs) for Chapter members
attending the technical programs of our meetings who hold
certifications with the American Board of Health Physicists, the Texas
Board of Licensure for Professional Medical Physicists, and The Medical Radiologic Technologist Certification Program, Texas Department of
Health.
-
Stay Current with New Innovations in the
Field – Besides the education provided by the STC
publication, The Billet, our Annual Meeting features presentations by
students pursuing degrees in the radiation protection and health
physics fields. The Annual Meeting of the STC affords the opportunity
for direct interaction between students of health physics and
radiation protection and Chapter members who may someday hire them.
Topics of their presentations represent a cross section of research
and state-of-the-art knowledge related to the health physics and
radiation protection fields.
-
Enjoy "One-Stop Shopping" –
A favorite event among Chapter members is our meeting dedicated to the
Chapter Affiliates. The venue is always a hotel on or close
to the beautiful San Antonio Riverwalk, around Valentine's Day. The meeting features
technical presentations by representatives of our Affiliates on topics
related to the services they provide and information about
state-of-the-art equipment, software, hardware, and services available
to the radiation safety professional. Breaks during the meeting are
taken in the Affiliate Exposition area where the radiation safety
professional can enjoy one-on-one visits with providers of service and
equipment. In summary, chapter members can learn about the
state of the art, consult with vendors, enjoy a weekend on the River,
and enjoy a Valentine's weekend treat all at one time.

Travel Texas and Tour Cutting-Edge
Facilities – The STC has a minimum of four meetings a year at
various venues throughout the South Texas area. The STC regularly has
meetings in Austin, College Station, Corpus Christi, Galveston, Houston,
San Antonio, and Waco. Whenever possible, the technical programs of our
meetings include tours of interesting and state-of-the-art facilities
throughout south Texas. For instance, STC members have enjoyed
exclusive tours of The University of Texas Nuclear Engineering
Teaching Laboratory, Texas A&M University Nuclear Science Center,
and Southwest Research Institute, to name a few.
-
Participate in Educating Our Future
– The STC is proud and honored to be able to continue the Science
Teacher Workshop program of education for science teachers, grade
levels 4 through 12. This program features STC members
traveling to various locations throughout the south Texas area and
providing presentations on radiation myth and fact. The goal of this
ambitious program is to educate teachers so they can return to the
classroom with lesson plans, a radiation detector, software, a video
tape, and invaluable reference materials to teach children the facts
about radiation. STC members involved in this program find great
personal and professional satisfaction knowing they are taking an
active role in properly educating the future of our world, our
children.
