Science Teacher Workshops
|

To ensure the Science Teacher Workshop meets the needs of Science Teachers, Al Evans, Chair of the Science Teacher Workshop Committee, has documented
suggested changes to the course material and how the
STW material is relevant to TEKS requirements. Take a look at these documents and let Al know what you think.

One-Day Continuing Education
Credit Workshop
Radiation and Health
|
|
The South Texas Chapter of the Health Physics Society,
Inc. (STC-HPS) is pleased and honored to continue this program of
education for science teachers, grade levels 4 through 12. In
keeping with the commitment of the STC to its
bylaws and founding principles of education and support of learning,
members of the STC agreed to make certain this very
worthwhile program continues. Knowing the teacher's job is daunting and not
filled with much recognition, we hold educators with the highest respect
and greatest regard. After all, it is the teacher who is educating and
providing our future. Thank you.

What is a Science Teacher
Workshop?
|
-
First and foremost, it's FUN!
-
Members of the STC go to various locations
throughout south Texas to provide teachers with informative and fun
presentations, using the latest in presentation technology, on the
facts about radiation. Typically conducted on Saturdays (sorry, but
our members have to work too!), the Workshop is divided into various
segments, including breaks, and typically runs a full day (8 hours). The last Workshop agenda included the following:
|
-
Welcome and Introductions
-
Fundamentals of Radiation
-
Cellular Biology and Radiation Health Effects
-
Exposure to Radiation in Modern Life
-
Radioactive Waste
-
Radiation Safety and Summary
|
|
|
-
FREE Lesson Plans
-
FREE Reference Materials
-
FREE Class Demonstrations
-
FREE Video Tape
-
FREE 2 Software Packages (for IBM or Mac)
-
FREE Radiation Detection Device
-
FREE Stylish Crate (to carry all the neat stuff back to school!)
-
FREE BREAKFAST and LUNCH!
|
|
How do I attend a
Workshop? |
|
Check this site often to see where we will be
conducting the next Workshop! Even
though the Workshop is free, we will need to know of your interest in
attending so that we can plan for enough food and refreshments. Class
size is very limited, typically no more than 40, so register early.
|
|
How can a Workshop be scheduled in my town? |
|
The STC is pleased to bring the Workshop to you.
All we ask for is some assistance with making local arrangements and
caterer coordination. STC supplies all the materials, experts
in radiation as presenters, and funds for catering. To get the ball
rolling, contact the Science Teacher Workshop Committee Chair.

STW 2006 Membership Interest Survey |
|
|
|
The South Texas Chapter of the Health Physics Society, Inc. (STC-HPS) is a
completely not-for-profit organization whose members represent a cross
section of the radiation safety and protection industry. The Science
Teacher Workshops are completely funded by donations provided by STC
members, Affiliates, and supporting organizations. All Workshop
presenters and coordinators are volunteers. Without their time and
efforts, this program would not exist. Thank you.
